This year the Lawrence High School volleyball team succeeded in defeating Free State on October 24th.  Senior Caitlin Broadwell describes the importance of the game, “It’s always one of most important games since Free State is our rival.  It’s also important to me because it was one of the last games I played as a Lion.”

Lawrence High was able to secure their victory over Free State after winning three of the five matches in the final game of the City Showdown. The victory improved the Lion’s record to 12-20. The LHS volleyball team would later finish the season with a record of 12 wins and 22 losses after losing to Olathe South on October 26th.

The game against Free State started with the Lions losing the first two matches 24 to 26, and 15 to 25.  In game three and four the Lions were able to beat Free State 25 to 18, and 25 to 23.

The final match would decide the winner of the best-of-five game, senior Jessica Lemus had this to say about the last match, “It was a little too close.  We ended up playing all five matches against them, and only won the last match by 2.”

Coach of the team, Stephanie Magnuson had this to say about the game, “Everyone contributed to a great comeback, crowd included!” Magnuson continued by saying, “The girls and the crowd never gave up and continued to push back until they found their way to the top.”

Winning the final match put Lawrence High ahead 3-2 in the game, giving the Lions victory over the Firebirds in the City Showdown. Junior Marlee Bird talks about the closeness of the game, “I was feeling good about the game after we won the 3rd and 4th matches, but we both played even harder in the last match so it was hard to be sure [who would win] before the match was over.”

Broadwell describes her feelings about the outcome of the game against Free State, “I was happy just to be able to play in the game.  I missed the beginning of the season because of my medical condition, and I was glad that I did not miss the game against them.”
